Whichever way the court case goes, the YSR Congress Party President Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy’s supporters hope that he would garner political mileage out of it.
If the CBI’s report nails him and the high court gives a go-ahead for a full-fledged inquiry, it would become a major campaign issue for Jagan.
Already, in the ongoing “Odarpu” Yatra in Kurnool district, the Kadapa MP has been focusing on “witch-hunting” and vindictive campaign by the Congress and the Telugu Desam Party against him and his family.
“What have I and my mother done to them to malign us like this?” he wondered, addressing public meetings.
Such emotional outreach could help in the next elections as well, his supporters say.
Even if the High Court orders a detailed inquiry into Jagan’s assets and the flow of investments into his companies, the CBI would take several months, even a year, to complete the investigation.
This would give an opportunity for Jagan to go to the people with an emotional agenda and tell them that it was all a joint conspiracy by Congress and TDP to stop him in his tracks and finish his political career.
Simultaneously, he and his supporters would argue that the land allotments made during the YSR regime reflected a collective decision of the cabinet for which Jagan could not be held accountable.
