The overseas market has become a crucial aspect for Tollywood economics. Given the significant presence of Telugus across the world, especially the US, focus has been on the rise. However, call it the greed of the producers or wrong estimations, most of the Telugu films are turning out to be disasters overseas. Here is a look at few ventures gone wrong in USA.
‘100% Love’ got a hit talk but then it suffered losses upto nearly Rs 20 lakhs. The only movies which became profitable this year are ‘Mr Perfect’ and ‘Mirapakaya’. ‘Sakthi’ came in with a total cost of Rs 1.85 cr and could recover only Rs 45 lakhs. The much talked about ‘Badrinath’ came in at a cost of Rs 1.6 cr but it recovered only Rs 35-40 lakhs.
‘Anaganaga Oka Dheerudu’ was another hyped venture which cost the US distributors a whopping Rs 1.2 cr but in return, it got only Rs 10 lakhs. ‘Veera’s total cost was Rs 70 lakhs but it recovered only Rs 5 lakhs. Finally, there was ‘KSD Appalraju’ which was sold at Rs 50 lakhs and resulted in a loss of Rs 50 lakhs, it just recovered theatre rentals.
Distributors are hoping it is time producers open their eyes and reduce the overseas prices if a balance has to be struck. If this continues, the chances are that the USA Market considered to be the strongest for overseas will fizzle out.
