With the deadline for the CBI to file a charge sheet in the Emaar Properties scam approaching fast, there is speculation that the investigating agency might arrest the senior IAS officer B P Acharya who was the industries secretary when the irregularities occurred.
Acharya, presently the Principal Secretary in the Home Department, was believed to have played a key role in the APIIC deal with Emaar Properties and the subsequent dilution of the government’s stake in the project, thus causing a huge revenue loss.
The IAS officer has already been questioned by the CBI sleuths with regard to the alleged irregularities in the allotment of the land and the modifications in the equity pattern. The CBI is believed to have sought the central government’s permission to arrest Acharya. Once the clearance is given by the Centre, he could be taken into custody.
The CBI has already arrested Koneru Prasad, believed to be the kingpin in the scam, and Sunil Reddy, a close aide of the YSR Congress Party President Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, in connection with the case. If arrested, Acharya will be the second IAS officer in the state to be arrested after Y Srilakshmi who was taken into custody and sent to jail in the Obulapuram mining scandal.
