Chennai: Noted make-up artiste M Peethambaram, who was known for his artistry and close association with actors MG Ramachandran and NT Rama Rao, passed away on Monday after a brief illness. He was 89.
Peethamabaram moved to Chennai from Trichur in Kerala in 1940. He started his career as an assistant make-up artiste at Vahini Studios. "He came up because of his friendship with MGR. In the 40s, they shared a house in Elephant Gate and took trams to watch English movies," said K Raman, his brother-in-law and fellow make-up artiste.
As MGR's career graph climbed, so did Peethambaram's. "We used to see artistes at the verandah of this Gopalapuram house," recalled son and filmmaker P Vasu. Peethambaram also became Telugu superstar NTR's chief make-up artiste. "The lord Krishna look he gave for NTR became so famous that he did make-up for the star till his last movie," said Raman.
He also worked with yesteryear actors Savithri, Gemini Ganesan and Hindi actors such as Ashok Kumar, Pran and Neetu Singh, he added.
When makers wanted to give actor Rajinikanth a Krishna-look for the 1980 movie Murattu Kaalai', they approached Peethambaram, said P Vimal, another son.
Peethambaram is survived by wife Kamalam and sons Vidyasagar, Vasu and Vimal, and daughters Vijayalakshmi and Vanaja. He will be cremated at the Besant Nagar crematorium at 2.30pm on Tuesday.
