Itsy-Bitsy Cholis Spice Up Bollywood

The glamorous choli made several hearts go "dhak dhak" when Madhuri Dixit gyrated to "Choli ke peeche kya hai" back in the early 1990s. Now the focus is once again on this indigenous piece of clothing for women, thanks to divas like Katrina Kaif and Vidya Balan, though designers warn against following the Bollywood trend blindly.

Be it Katrina in her popular "Sheila ki jawaani" avatar and in the item number "Chikni chameli" in the re-made "Agneepath", or Vidya Balan unabashedly showing off her cleavage as dancing star Silk in "The Dirty Picture" -- the choli is back into prominence.

Even Malaika Arora sizzled in a stylish choli for chartbuster "Munni badnaam hui", Bipasha donned the teeny-weeny top for hit item numbers like "Beedi" and "Namak", and slim and trim Anushka Sharma was also seen in it the song "Laung da lashkara".

Former beauty queen Aishwarya Rai too didn't shy away from the choli for her chartbusters "Ishq Kameena" and "Kajra re", and even flaunted the garment confidently in "Jodhaa Akbar". And Kareena Kapoor did total justice to it - whether it was in the film "Chameli" or in her latest song "Chhammak challo".

However, if you plan to wear one of these to a party or a wedding, fashion designers have a word of caution.

Required first and foremost is a perfect 10 body -- a trim waistline and washboard stomach always work for choli enthusiasts. Otherwise, Vidya's "Dirty Picture" look is a no-no!

"Vidya has played a character, which was meant to be little voluptuous. But in everyday life, please don't wear that look if you don't have a perfect waistline. You don't want your love handles showing; neither do you want to make a fool of yourself. So only if you have a toned body, go for the choli," designer Nida Mahmood, known for her quirky and stylish blouses, told IANS.

Mahmood says a good, simple and classic cut is the basic requisite to an "eye-popping" choli.

"I think the first most important thing for a good choli is the cut. It is nice to keep it classic. That's what makes it stylish. The rest -- the colour and embellishments come later. I think strange necklines and unnecessary strings should be avoided, and then the choli can be teamed with anything - a sari or a skirt and dupatta," Mahmood told IANS.

Designer Varija Bajaj advises busty women and those without toned backs to avoid cholis.

"Cholis accentuate the bust; so heavier women must avoid it. Besides, in India, women are not as comfortable showing off their cleavage as they are about showing off their back. What they don't realise is that they need a toned back to show it off in a sexy choli," said Bajaj.

Since a lot of old-time actresses like Jaya Prada, Rekha, Hema Malini and Sridevi used to flaunt garish cholis with front knots, Bajaj warns against following the style blindly.

"What used to be the Bollywood style cholis cannot be worn in day-to-day life. Earlier, film actresses used to wear cholis with a bust patch, which would look very awkward on a woman in a wedding. So cholis have got a contemporary look now," he said.

According to her, Priyanka Chopra's "bikini blouse" in the song "Desi girl" is a perfect example of the change in the look of the traditional choli.

"Cholis are popular in Gujarat and Rajasthan, but those are quite embroidered and embellished. Today's women like to wear cholis with what we call cocktail saris. So crystal studded blouses, or silver and golden-coloured blouses which may or may not be backless have taken over the bright orange, yellow, red and green colours of cholis popular in the rural areas of India," added Bajaj, known for her bridal wear.

Mahmood added: "A lot of actresses wore heavily embellished cholis because the character required them to. Even Kareena wore a gota-choli in 'Chameli'. For people off screen, it is best to keep cholis simple, and they should keep the choice of colour wise," she added.

According to Niharika Khan, who designed for Vidya in "The Dirty Picture", cholis are a very sexy part of Indian wardrobe, but people should use the right style depending upon their body and frame.

However, now that Charan is getting married and he will have honeymoon and other engagements on the personal front, the buzz is that he may not be able to cater so much time.

Another cine member said “Right now, Cherry’s focus is totally on ‘Rachcha’ as he wants it to become a super hit at any cost. So, he may not focus like before. Moreover, with the marriage and other things, his speed will come down. Competing with Mahesh Babu in the next two years is doubtful.” Let us see what happens.

Highlights of Ram Charan Engagement

On Thursday night, for the first time ever, an engagement ceremony was telecast live in India.

It was veteran actor and politician Chiranjeevi’s son Ram Charan Tej and Apollo Group of Hospitals’ chairman C Pratap Reddy’s granddaughter Upasana Kamineni’s big day.

While the two shweethearts exchanged rings, the young actor’s fans and followers could enjoy the function on their television screens. Thanks to the multi-camera setup that captured the event, the online editing of the footage and the final telecast across various satellite channels in the country.

A private event, only selected high profile guests were sent bar coded invitation cards for the event. However, the star did not feel like leaving out his many fans, claimed industry insiders. Thus the idea of a live telecast of the engagement ceremony was born.

The function organised by the would-be-bride’s family was held at Temple Tree farmhouse in Moinabad in the outskirts of Hyderabad. Moreover, the live telecast and the bar-coded invitation cards were not the only striking aspects of the event.

The groom, Ram Charan Tej donned a sherwani worth Rs 1.5 lakh and Upasana’s jewellery, imported specially from Brazil, was worth approximately Rs 10 crore. Even the decoration was undertaken by a Thailand based company.

Bachchans reject Rs 5 cr for Baby B picture

Buzz is that two premier international magazines have approached the Bachchan family with Rs 5 crore in return of exclusive pictures of Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan's baby, born on November 16. This comes four years after international magazines offered the star couple a good number of crores to share their wedding photographs.

Not surprisingly pa-in-law, Amitabh Bachchan maintains that he'll never sell his grand-daughter's pictures to any media organisation. From the time Aishwarya was admitted to hospital, a section of the media had been trying to pull strings to acquire  exclusive pictures of the baby girl.

However, when the mother and the baby were discharged from the hospital, no one had been able to get any pictures of the newborn child. And naturally, that has boosted the curiosity among celebrity watchers.

"More so as she's been described by her grandfather as a baby with an 'angelic face' and light-hued, beautiful eyes, just like her actress-mother, Aishwarya. Not to forget the morphed photographs of Aishwarya and her baby floating around on the Internet," points out a source. However, the family has decided not to release any photographs, citing 'personal reasons'.

Also, upset by the circulation of morphed pictures of Aishwarya and her daughter on the web, the Bachchan family reportedly traced the original picture that had been photoshopped. As Big B himself tweeted recently, "To those that clamour for the baby's picture, I have said it before, it will not be happening.  Do understand, it's personal."

We often come across wives of celebrities, particularly in film industry, taking up interesting business activities that not only make them big money, but also help them expand their network into business leagues.

Especially, costume designing and selection has been the favourite choice of these celebrity wives, as it is one of the lucrative professions.

In the past, we used to talk about Kamal Hasan’s first wife Vani, who was so popular as the costume designer for the former. The activity still continues now.

Same is the case with S S Rajamouli’s wife Rama. For most of the films he directs, she is the obvious choice of the dress selection for heroines.

Of late, Namrata has started trying her hand in the event management, too. As an event manager, she wants to organize the function on par with that of ‘Robo’s audio release function. She is now busy making arrangements for the event.

'Kolaveri' versus 'Pawar' slap song video

If Tamil star Dhanush's "Kolaveri Di" song has gone viral on the Internet by crossing 13 million hits on YouTube, the "Chamaat song" on Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar being slapped has registered about 1 million hits.

"Kolaveri Di" was released on Nov 16. It has now spawned vesions in different languages including Gujarati.

"Kolaveri Di" will feature in Dhanush's next film "3", which is being directed by his wife Aishwarya. Meanwhile 18-year-old Anirudh Ravichander who has composed the song, is on a high after making a phenomenon on cyber space through his composition and lyrics.

It has been quite a while since the film ‘Bodyguard’ has been on the floors and slowly but steadily, it is inching closer to the release date. However, not much Hulchul has been happening regarding the film despite the fact that it has a big star like victory Venkatesh.
 
The cine analysts say “Firstly, the familiarity factor is too high since this film has been remade into Tamil, Hindi. So, it is a challenge for director Gopichand Malineni to come up with something different and convincing which the Telugu audience has to connect.”
 
They add “Venky’s market has not been that great in the recent past owing to his spate of flops. So, buyers will think twice before taking up this project.” To add to the situation, it is heard that the team is not very happy with the way the entire film has shaped up so they have gone into re-shooting few scenes. Only time will reveal the fate of Venky’s ‘Bodyguard’.

NTR ignores Babai presence at Cherry function!

The engagement function of Ram Charan Teja, the only son of megastar-politician Chiranjeevi, with Upasana Kamineni, grand daughter of Apollo group chairman Pratap C Reddy on Thursday night witnessed the presence of who-is-who of the film industry, politics and the government, as both Chiranjeevi as well as Reddy were highly influential persons in the society.

While everybody greeted the other person at the function both out of affection as well as courtesy, but there were a few celebrities who stayed away from the people they apparently didn’t like.

Take for example, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy did not see eye to eye with Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu, though they sat in adjacent sofas in the front row. Kiran did not wish Naidu and vice versa.

So was the case with Junior NTR, who came to the function along with his wife Lakshmi Pranathi. All through the ceremony, he was seen chatting with Pavan Kalyan, while his wife was seen in the company of Rama Rajamouli. And when Naidu came to the function along with Balakrishna, they passed by Junior NTR, who just gave a look and turned the other side.

Though everybody, including veteran Akkineni Nageshwara Rao, his son Nagarjuna and even Jayasudha, got up and wished Naidu and Balakrishna, Junior NTR did not even bother to wish his “babai.” Even Lakshmi Pranathi did not appear to have greeted his granduncle Naidu. And it did not escape the attention of the eagle-eyed media!

The impact that Silk Smitha has on the lives of film audience and people needs no introduction. Here is a reflection of what must have happened in the life of the sex symbol of the south

Story:
Vidya is a girl who follows her dreams and her dream is to become an actress. For that, she is willing to defy any norm. She also has a favourite in the form of superstar Naseeruddin Shah. After the initial weeks of struggle, she finally manages a small dance stint for a song. This falls in the eye of the noted producer Rajesh and he christens her as Silk. In no time, Silk also gets a chance to work with her favorite super star and she also becomes his bed partner for more opportunities and growth. During her journey, she comes across the innocent Tusshar, the talented director Emraan who hates her to the core.

However, what starts as a journey of dreams, success, entertainment and stardom for Silk soon reveals another side to it. What happens in between forms the rest of the story.

PerformancesVidya Balan is outstanding. Right from the rustic girl to a sex bomb to a woman who loses it all, she has shown her versatility to the fullest and carries the film exceedingly well.

Naseeruddin Shah must be saluted. Despite his real life stardom and iconic status, he simply mixed into the script and gave space. His performance was simply superb.

Emraan Hashmi is not a star just like that. There is an uncanny magic about him that makes the audience glued to the screen when he is there. He was good in his role.

Tusshar Kapoor was effective and he does full justice to his bit. Rajesh Sharma was excellent, Anju Mahendroo was apt, Imran Hasnee was neat, Mangal Kenkre was moderate. The others did their bit as required and added value.

Analysis
Though it is a Hindi film, the fact that it has been strongly inspired from the life of Silk Smitha makes it an exciting product for the south audience. The dubbed version’s release is a good convenience. The director ensured that the film flows with smooth precision and no controversies can be raised. The real life for the film comes from the dialogues.

Equally good are few scenes where the peaks are at their best. Of course, with the kind of talented cast the director has got, this was expected. The scenes to look out for are

• When Vidya Balan receives an award and addresses the crowds with her thank you speech
• When Emraan Hashmi talks to Vidya about his feelings and how they relate to her
• When Naseeruddin Shah’s wife walks in while he is making love to Vidya

Overall, this is a film which has a strong dose of reality and a message to the many aspiring girls who are obsessed with stardom. In real life, Silk Smitha stood as an example for glory and the other side of it. This is delivered in the right package through the film. Given the budget involved and the content, there is no doubt that the film will become a commercial hit.

This has Vidya Balan in the lead and it is heard that given the craze the film has developed, the team is now considering the option of putting the blouse and bra used by Vidya for auction at the right moment. A senior Bollywood observer commented “Ultimately, money matter in Mumbai circuit. So, if that is got through selling sex on screen or sexy outfits off the screen, it doesn’t really matter. According to an analysis done by the filmnagar folks, it is heard that only two names stand tall. They are Allari Naresh and Nani. It is heard that they are being tagged as the best bets when it comes to Minimum Guarantee heroes. So far, their career record and box office graph has been very healthy.

The analysts say “Both Naresh and Nani have strong acceptance in the B, C centres. Moreover, the flavour of comedy they generate is natural and connects well with the masses. They work in cost effective projects and focus more on the scripts. Their fundamentals are strong and that’s what gives them the success.”
