Is Nandamuri Balakrishna working behind the scene to unseat his brother-in-law and Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu?
A section of party leaders suspect that there could be more to the sudden burst of activity on the part of Balakrishna than meets the eye.
The sources say that Naidu has been closely watching the moves of his brother-in-law, his public speeches, his messages to the party cadre and his new-found passion for road shows. This is being done to pick up any signs of scheming by Balakrishna before hand and then nip it in the bud.
Of late, Balakrishna has been hitting the roads and making aggressive speeches and targeting his political rivals, particularly the actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi who is now a key player in the ruling Congress. In a calculated move, he has been trying to revive the memory of good old NTR days and repositioning himself as the political heir of NTR.
There is a growing feeling in the party that it would be difficult for Naidu to regain public confidence, given the pro-reforms and corporate style image he had gathered during his nine-year stint as Chief Minister.
The TDP chief has moved far away from the pro-poor and populist image of th party founder NTR.
A section of the TDP leaders suspect that Balakrishna may well be working his way to capture the party’s reins before the 2014 elections by projecting himself in the mould of NTR.
